Zero Waste Wardrobe - 14th & 15th March
Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th March, 9.30-5pm
Join me for a weekend workshop delving into the world of zero waste sewing and patterns.
Whether you have tried this approach to patterns before or have just always wanted to give it a go, this two day workshop will give you a great overview, understanding of the concept and you will walk away with two completed garments.
We will be using the book, ‘Zero Waste Patterns’ by Birgitta Helmersson, a copy of which is included in the course cost. (If you already own the book use code BOOK22 at checkout to remove the cost)
On Saturday we will begin with an overview and introduction to the concept of zero waste sewing and patterns and how this differs from traditional methods. From here we will take our measurements and look at the way you marry your measurements with the width of the fabric you are using to ascertain the size of the pieces you cut. There are no main pattern pieces for this approach, and you measure specific sizes and draw them onto the fabric before cutting.
We shall then move onto cutting and sewing the Tee block from the book. I will also talk you through some really accessible ways to customise the pattern (such as the gathered sleeve shown in the image above) so you can really make it your own. This is a fantastic piece and a really great staple.
We shall then move onto the trouser block. These relaxed fit trousers include an elastic waistband and optional patch pockets.
I will provide calico to create your garments, giving you a chance to practice and make a toile. You are more than welcome to bring your own fabric to use in class if you prefer to dive straight in. More details shall be sent following booking.
The boxy style that zero waste patterns produce lend themselves to a variety of fabrics, have a relaxed fit and making them a brilliant base for customising.
What will we cover?
The concept of zero waste sewing, specifically the approach in Zero Waste Patterns
How to take measurements
Combine the width of the fabric being used with our measurements to work out the size required
Draw and cut the pattern pieces as per the zero waste method
Construction of the garments
accessible ways to customise the basic blocks for great versatility and discussion of the way different fabric choices will affect the look of the finished pieces.
What is included?
Zero Waste Patterns by Birgitta Helmersson
Calico to create the tee and trouser block, plus elastic for the trousers.
Use of all tools, and threads required to complete the pieces.
Postits and a notebook to help you keep track of all the measurements (BELIEVE ME this is very helpful)
10% off anything purchased in class.
What do you need to bring?
Your sewing machine (if using your own) together with needles and power cable.
Pre washed fabric of your choice if you wish to make your garment in this straight away, together with matching thread. If you intend to bring your own fabric you can indicate this on the booking form and I will be in touch directly to advise how much to bring dependent on the width of your chosen fabric.
Who is this for?
The focus of the weekend is going to be learning the zero waste process. You need to be confident with your sewing machine and ideally have completed a few projects. These do not need to be garments, but you might find some understanding of garment construction is helpful.
If you are unsure if your ability is suitable for the class or want to check any details please feel free to contact me at rachel@hackleydesignstudio.com
As with all my classes, this is suitable for those age 16+.
PLEASE NOTE THIS CLASS REQUIRES A MINIMUM NUMBER OF ATTENDEES TO RUN.
