Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st March

10-4.30pm both days

Have you always wanted to sew a quilted garment but found yourself daunted by the layers, the quilting, not to mention the bias binding!? This workshop is ideal for you if you are already comfortable on your sewing machine and want to try out the world of quilted clothing.

Join me for the whole weekend where I will take you through everything you need to know to sew your very own quilted waistcoat. I shall also show you how to draft your own lovely big pocket (as shown in the pictures)

Please note that as creating our quilted fabric is a key part of the class pre-quilted fabric is not suitable for the workshop.

To allow for sewing time in class you will need to cut your pattern pieces and fabric before the weekend. The pattern will be posted to you two weeks (or earlier by prior arrangement) before the workshop, and the PDF sent to you after class.

What will we cover?

  • Making up the quilt sandwich

  • Marking, basting and troubleshooting to get a great finish when quilting your pieces.

  • Assembling your quilted garment, sewing seams and handling layers.

  • Adding pockets to your garment

  • Binding - how to prepare binding, including cutting your own, handling bias and sewing it to your garment for a good finish.

  • Different methods of finishing your garment to create a reversible piece.

  • Hand sewing to finish binding on certain areas.

What is included?

  • Quilted Jacket Pattern - we shall be using the Everyday Waistcoat Pattern from The New Craft House. This has a mens and womens version (both linked). You can select which you would like to use when you book. You shall receive a paper copy of the pattern and instructions as well as the electronic version to be sent after the workshop.

  • Use of all equipment and tools required.

  • Use of a studio machine if required.

  • 10% off anything purchased in class (fabrics, patterns, haberdashery) this shall also be applied to any fabric and wadding you purchase in advance to use in the workshop.

What do you need to bring?

  • Your sewing machine (if using your own) together with needles and power cable.

  • NOTE - fabric amounts will vary depending on size and version you are making.‍ ‍I will send out details following booking on the exact requirements depending on the size you are making.

  • As a rough guide the amounts listed below will be enough for all sizes -

  • 1.6m of 150cm wide prewashed outer fabric. Non stretchy, woven.

  • 1.6m of 150cm wide prewashed lining fabric. Non stretchy, woven.

  • 1.5m of 150cm wide wadding (pre washed if applicable)

  • Matching thread for quilting and construction

  • Walking foot for your sewing machine is strongly advised.

Who is this for?

You should be able to confidently use your sewing machine, and have completed some projects, these do not have to have been garment or quilting projects, but you may find that this is helpful.

You will be required to cut your paper pattern and cut your fabric prior to the workshop, so you should ensure you are happy with this. I will be able to provide advice on sizing and fabric choice in advance ot class.
