Introduction to Machine Quilting - 6 Weeks from 23/7
Thursday Evenings
6-8.30pm
6 weeks from 23rd July
Quilting can seem daunting when you first approach it, but it can be such a wonderful addition to your sewing repertoire once you get to grips with it.
If you have always wanted to learn to quilt, or have tried and ended up frustrated with key elements here and there – this is the course for you.
Over 6 weeks I will take you through each step of the process, from selecting fabrics, designs, stitch choices and binding.
This class is not just for those who want to make traditional quilted blankets and homewares, these skills are invaluable and transferrable to creating quilted clothing. Quilted clothing is incredibly popular and knowing how to create your own quilted fabrics, rather than rely on shop bought pre quilted fabrics opens up a huge range of possibilities to you. You will soon see that if you can think it, you can probably quilt it, bags, sewing rolls, oven gloves…..you’ll be making them all!
You will receive a pieces of wadding for all the samples and to try all the techniques, but you also receive a piece big enough to make a small quilt as well as backing fabric. As we work through the different techniques you will have the option to begin working on a small quilt, as well as trying everything out as well as building a reference library of samples. It can be lovely to try your new skills on a full piece, and working on a smaller one makes this a much more achievable goal. Wadding size for small quilt detailed below.
What will we cover?
The anatomy of a quilt and key elements to consider when starting out.
Key materials – fabric, wadding, threads.
Equipment – not just your sewing machine but the best tools to help you.
Patchwork - Patterns, improvisational and whole cloth quilting – how these different approaches can yield vastly different results.
Composition.
Cutting and preparing fabric for different applications.
Sewing your pieces together for the best results, including timesaving tips such as chaining.
Quilting through your pieces – stitch in the ditch and free motion options.
*note – free motion quilting/ embroidery requires a specific foot for your machine. I do not have spares for use in the studio. If you would like to buy one for your machine to bring to class so you can try this technique, I can advise what you need in advance.
Binding – how to make it, use it and secure it. Corners, mitres.
Quilted clothing and accessories – we shall have a chance to discuss how to approach quilted clothing, bags and more, and how the techniques would apply.
Who is this for?
Anyone who would like to gain knowledge and confidence in sewing and creating quilts! You should have good working knowledge of a sewing machine and confidently be able to sew several stitches and change the settings. You do not need to have sewn a quilt or done any patchwork before.
You do not need to have any special equipment (such as a walking foot or darning foot) but I will advise in advance of class starting what these are and if they might be beneficial and you can decide to purchase these yourself.
What is included?
Use of a studio machine, if required.
Full instruction and demonstrations on all techniques.
Piece of soya/cotton wadding to use for samples and a piece large enough to make a small quilt (approx 76cm x 76 cm/ 30”x30”)
Fabrics for patchwork samples and binding and backings.
Threads.
Use of all studio equipment and tools required.
10% off anything purchased in class - fabric, wadding, haberdashery, tools and more.
