This is a selection of recommended fabric shops and haberdashers, and pattern shops. Hopefully it is a helpful resource and starting point if you are new to sourcing fabric online. This will be regularly updated so keep checking back.

Merchant & Mills – Fabric, patters, books, tools, and notions. Stunning quality. Based in Rye. A firm favourite of sewists around the world.
BAWN – Glasgow based and with sustainability at the heart of all they do.
Mandors – Glasgow. Quite a lot is dedicated to curtains and upholstery fabrics, but it does have a lot. Worth a rummage if you are in the area. Some available online.
Guthrie & Ghani – You may remember Lauren from Season 1 of the Great British Sewing Bee. Well this is her gorgeous shop.
New Craft House – Deadstock fabric, haberdashery and notions. They also have a selection of their own patters for sale. Worth trawling through to find some treasures.
Fabric Godmother – They often share videos of their fabrics on their social media channels, so you can get an idea of what the drape and movement of a fabric will be like.
Ray Stitch – A self declared ‘mecca for fabric lovers of all kinds - dressmakers, crafters, stylists, interior designers, young and old and of any gender - there’s something for everyone.’ Their physical shop is in Islington, but you can also shop online.
The Fold Line – Patterns and tools. They also excel in putting together regular edits of patterns they recommend to emulate the latest trends or your favourite brands.
Simply Fabrics – Brixton, I am told they have great linen. They also sell designer deadstock.
Minerva – Big selection, often quite low price point.
Cloth House – Fabric, haberdashery, homewares and vintage
Aberdeen Sewing Machines – For all your servicing and machine needs. They have a small, but growing selection of fabric, threads and haberdashery.
Dots ‘n’ Stripes - Dundee based. You can arrange to visit but it doesn’t seem they are open all the time as a permanent retail unit. Extensive online collection.
James Tailoring – sustainable haberdasher
William Gee - Haberdashers
Empress Mills – Fabrics and Haberdashery
Hobbycraft (Union Square) - Not exactly a recommendation, but they are one of the few places local to us in Aberdeen we have to shop for fabric and supplies so it would be remiss of me to not include it.
Thanks for both the recommendations Elisabeth! I’ll get them added to the blog. ☺️
And I also recommend Catkin and Scraps. She has a physical shop in Ulverston, Cumbria and an online store too. I have bought in person and online. Fantastic service every time. I popped onto her shop the other day for a few bits and ended up leaving after nearly an hour, with lots of answers to questions I'd been meaning to ask someone for ages. Very patient and a really good stock of fabric and patterns, despite being such a wee store.
I'd like to add Tango Textiles in Peterhead to the list. One of our last remaining local (NE Scotland) fabric stores. Cash if buying in person, but also sells via Ebay and Etsy.
